David Burt and the Progressive Labour Party (PLP) maintained a dominant hold over the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA), the Independent Candidates Organization, and the Free Democratic Movement (FDM) in the latest general election. The PLP secured 25 seats, while the OBA claimed 11. The FDM and Independent Movement failed to secure any representation.
Among the fresh faces joining the PLP government are Alexa Lightbourne, Pastor Leroy Bean, Paul Wilmot, and Owen Darrell. On the opposition side, the OBA welcomed new members Linda Smith and Michael Fahy.
Despite the victory, voter turnout was reported to be low. Addressing supporters outside the PLP headquarters on Court Street, Premier Burt expressed gratitude to Bermudians, particularly those who supported the party. He emphasized that the win was not just for the PLP but for the entire nation.
Acknowledging the struggles faced by Bermudians including rising food prices, economic instability, and high electricity cost Burt assured citizens that his administration would tackle these pressing issues.
He also reminded the public that he intends to step down as Premier in approximately 18 months, around October 2026. However, until then, he reaffirmed his commitment to serving Bermuda and ensuring that his government continues to work for the people.
