BREAKING NEWS:
A writ has been issued in the Supreme Court on behalf of Progressive Labour Party leadership contender Curtis Dickinson, in a developing legal challenge involving the party’s rules governing membership, delegates and participation in party affairs.
TNN News understands that the writ names Curtis Dickinson, Shea-tai Maurice Smith, Sheila Maureen Brown, Winifred Rose Stevens and Jay-Lee Marie Smith as the plaintiffs.
Named as defendants are Progressive Labour Party Chairman Dawn Simmons and PLP Secretary General Patricia Baisden.
The legal action comes amid growing controversy surrounding a position reportedly taken at a recent PLP Central Committee meeting concerning the eligibility of newly joined party members to vote, serve as delegates or participate in certain party office positions.
TNN News understands from legal sources that the writ is connected to concerns over the constitutionality of that position.
At the Central Committee meeting, TNN understands that Premier David Burt stated that a number of newer PLP members would not be eligible to become delegates or participate in certain party office positions.
That position has now apparently become the subject of a legal challenge.
TNN News has also spoken with constitutional-law representative Phil Perinchief, who has characterized the process as unconstitutional.
The development comes at a particularly significant time for the Progressive Labour Party, with Curtis Dickinson and Jason Hayward challenging to become the party’s next leader.
The issue has already generated considerable discussion on social media, with PLP supporters and members weighing in as news of the Supreme Court action spreads.
TNN News has reached out to the Dickinson camp for an official response and is awaiting comment.
As this is an active legal matter, TNN News will continue to report on the proceedings and any official statements from the parties involved.
