Covid Disrupts Football’s Curtain Raiser

The 2021-22 football season got off to a stuttering start courtesy of the resilient Covid-19 virus, which forced the cancellation of the Charity Cup match between Robin Hood and Devonshire Cougars as well as the postponement of the Dudley Eve Trophy qualifying match between Hamilton Parish and Young Men’s Social Club at the National Sports Centre.

The Bermuda Football Association (BFA) made the decision to not play the games
following Friday’s testing of the teams’ players and match officials, which presumably resulted in one or more positive returns, thus precipitating the moves made by the governing body.

An initial release from the BFA advised of the postponement of the first game via a statement that said: “Please be advised that following COVID-19 testing on players and officials on Friday, September 3rd the Bermuda Football Association has decided to postpone the first game scheduled for this evening at the National Sports Centre between Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club vs Young Men’s Social Club until further notice.”

This was later followed with a similar press release telling of the second game’s cancellation.

“The Bermuda Football Association (BFA) would like to advise that the scheduled Charity Cup match between Robin Hood FC and Devonshire Recreation Club at the National Sports Centre has been cancelled,” read the second release, adding. “All tickets holders for the Charity Cup match and Dudley Eve Play-Off match will receive a full refund.”

The situation provided a discouraging notion for players, officials and fans alike following a 2020-21 season that was cancelled midway through due to the coronavirus.
