After receiving both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, NBC Boston producer Mimi Segal and her husband decided to take a week-long vacation to Bermuda. They arrived on the island on Saturday April 3.
“ [The main reason] we chose Bermuda because they have such strict protocols in place to deal with the virus, and [my husband and I] felt safe coming here as a result,” Ms. Segal said.
The couple were quite surprised when Ms. Segal tested for the Coronavirus on her fourth day on the island and that they would have to quarantine inside their hotel rooms for 14 days as a result.
Ms. Segal shared her story on an NBC boston segment, entitled “Trapped in Paradise.”
“[During those two weeks], the hotel manager bought us cereal and fruit for breakfast and lunch, and we got food from the hotel for dinner,” Ms. Segal said.
The couple were fortunate enough to have a room with a balcony view, but certainly were not prepared for the extended stay. They even had to have some of their prescription medication shipped to the hotel.
“There are a lot of logistics involved in [clearing medications through customs] during a global pandemic in a foriegn country”, Ms. Segal said.
Prior to flying to the island, she and her husband purchased COVID trip insurance, which covered part of their added expenses.
“ You may have to look around for COVID insurance, but in my opinion, it’s surely an investment worth making,” Ms. Segal said.
Even though she acknowledges that the hotel has been very generous with her and her husband during this time, this is not how they planned to spend so much of their money.
Ms. Segal was able to work from home, so being “marooned” did not cause her to miss any days from work.
