Community Spirit Shines at BUEI Christmas Market Despite Unfortunate Theft

Today marked the much-anticipated premiere of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) annual Christmas market, an event brimming with festive spirit, creativity, and community. However, for one vendor, Onika Cross, the day began with an unfortunate twist.

“Cookies By Cross,” a beloved local baking business, faced a setback when the owner discovered her car had been broken into early this morning. The theft included 56 freshly baked cookies—two full containers—valued at $560. But for the baker, it was not just about the financial loss.

“I spent all day yesterday baking and preparing for today’s market,” she shared. “Last night, I loaded some containers into the car to make space for the final touches. When I went to add another container this morning, I realized the others were gone. It turned my whole day upside down.”

Beyond the monetary loss, the incident disrupted the baker’s plans and left her deflated. “It wasn’t just the money,” she explained. “It was the time, the energy, and the vision I had for today. It completely threw me for a loop. I was so disoriented I didn’t arrive until 11 a.m., even though I’m usually here by 8am.”

When asked what she would say to the individual responsible, her response was heartfelt: “Why? Why cookies? If you were hungry, I would have cooked you a meal. I never waste. I often give away cookies that don’t meet my standards to families in need. I don’t understand why someone would do this.”

Despite the unfortunate start, the story took a heartwarming turn. Community members rallied to support her. “Two ladies called me—one asked for my account number and another came in person. It was so humbling. It reminded me that community spirit is still alive,” she said, visibly moved by the generosity.

As the day continued, the vendor remained grateful and determined to move forward. “I’m thankful for the support and encouragement. I’ll keep baking because that’s what I love, and it’s what I do best.”

The BUEI Christmas market continues to showcase the resilience and warmth of Bermuda’s community, proving that even in the face of adversity, the holiday spirit prevails.
