College Funding and Scholarship Information Webinar Series

The Chairman of the Mirrors Alumni and Friends Association, Mr. John Perinchief, is thrilled to announce the launch of the Mirrors PeerForward, “Finding Funding for College” Zoom webinar series where parents and senior school students can learn more about where and how to find the funds to pay for college, every Tuesday starting, February 1st 2022 through March 1, 2022.

Participants will also learn about tips on managing the scholarship and funding application processes. This is a part of the new Mirrors PeerForward programme which launched in both public high schools in August 2021 where 30 student peer leaders and 6 school advisors attended a summer workshop to lead college going activities in their schools.

The “Finding Funding for College” Zoom webinar series will cover topics about the range of loans, scholarship options and opportunities available from organizations in Bermuda. Topics will include funding for university, vocation and trades, and internships. Scholarship awarders will share what they look for in a candidate including ‘must have’ criteria verses ‘nice-to-have”. Scholarship recipients and their families will share their experiences and offer tips about their application processes and outcomes.
Sandra Dill, Mirrors PeerForward Manager, stated, “Parents, guardians and students are invited to register for the weekly Zoom sessions. Each session will feature guest speakers including scholarship recipients, lending agencies and some of Bermuda’s largest scholarship providers, including the Bermuda Government, Bermuda College, and the Centennial Bermuda Foundation.”

Mrs. Dill went on to state, “Finances should not be the main barrier for not going to college. Kimberley Jackson, Mirrors Programme Manger indicated, “We are hosting these sessions because we want to see more public school students attending college and applying for the many loans and scholarships that are available in our community”.

Mrs. Dills experience in the college preparation area indicates that collectively, scholarships awarded to students each year totals over $4 million dollars and that students might be surprised at the eligibility requirements. Mrs. Dill further stated, “In our experience many students don’t apply because they think they don’t meet the selection criteria when in fact, many could.”

The ‘Finding Funds for College’ zoom events will be held every Tuesday evening, 6:00pm – 7:30pm, beginning February 1st, 2022 to March 1st, 2022. The sessions will be interactive with a live question and answer format. Register for each session by calling the Mirrors office at 294-9291 or e-mail mirrors@gov.bm
