COH Parks Department Employee Relieved of his duties Following Racism Investigation

A Parks Department employee at the Corporation of Hamilton has been relieved of his duties following an internal investigation into allegations that racist remarks were directed at two Black coworkers earlier this month.

The incident first came to light on July 8, when TNN News received reports alleging that a manager within the Corporation’s Parks Department had made offensive racial comments that left several employees upset and demanding accountability.

According to employees who spoke to TNN on the condition of anonymity, the incident allegedly occurred on Monday, July 6, when a supervisor, described as a foreign worker serving a probationary period, reportedly referred to two Black coworkers as “little monkeys.”

Following the allegations, TNN sought confirmation from Corporation of Hamilton Chief Executive Officer Dwayne Caines, who confirmed at the time that the matter was under investigation.

Today, TNN can confirm that the employee at the center of the allegations has been terminated from his position.

The dismissal follows the Corporation’s internal investigation into the matter, bringing an end to a case that had generated concern among staff and renewed calls for accountability and a workplace free from discrimination.

The Corporation of Hamilton has issued a formal statement regarding the outcome, which is posted below.

“The Corporation of Hamilton confirms that the individual who served as Parks Manager is no longer employed by the Corporation. As this relates to an employment matter, the Corporation will not comment on the specific circumstances or details surrounding the matter.
