With just over a week to go until the biggest event on Bermuda’s cricket calendar, Somerset Cricket Club is deep in preparation for Cup Match—and so is their head coach, Janeiro Tucker.
Though this year marks Tucker’s first full Cup Match as head coach, he’s no stranger to the classic rivalry.
“It’s something new in terms of title, but I’ve been doing this since 2016,” Tucker said. “So it’s not really new—just a new label. The responsibility hasn’t changed. I know what we need to do to retain the Cup.”
Tucker has already made his presence felt at training sessions, leading with intensity and focus.
“From physical training to fielding, batting, even birding—we’re doing it all. I make sure nobody’s just sitting around. Everyone’s moving, everyone’s involved.”
•A Dream Fulfilled
Taking the reins as head coach is a milestone Tucker doesn’t take lightly.
“To take over the leading role—it’s something you dream of. First, you want to play in Cup Match. Then one day, you hope to coach it. I’m looking forward to it.”
•Fitness at the Forefront
With high temperatures and large crowds expected, fitness has become a key component of Somerset’s preparation.
“Fitness is going to play a major role this year,” Tucker explained. “These guys are doing physical training every week. We want them mentally and physically prepared. On those days, it’s going to feel like 100 degrees with thousands of people around. That takes toughness.”
One of coach Janeiro Tucker’s training methods involves combining fitness and technical work—challenging players to move from workouts straight into batting or fielding drills to simulate game-day fatigue.
•A Level Playing Field
Tucker also spoke about the talent rising through the ranks—including a promising young female cricketer, Ms. Ray.
“I was really impressed with her throwing and what she knows about the game,” he said. “Honestly, I could see her as a player one day. I don’t rule anything out. Everyone who comes to training has a chance.”
•Open Selection, Strong Squad As for his squad?
“I think we’re looking really good,” Tucker said. “We’ve had some new guys come up for training. You might see someone new in the lineup this year.”
He emphasized that team selection is based on effort and preparation—not reputation.
“I don’t discriminate. Everybody’s got a shot. It’s about how you train, how you prepare, how focused and ready you are.”
With the Cup Match just days away, Tucker’s vision is clear: keep the Cup in Somerset—and build a legacy based on discipline, preparation, and belief.
