Clyde Best Mural Vandalized By Graffiti before it even Starts

Clyde Best Mural Vandalized By Graffiti before it even Starts. To recognize Bermudian international football legend Clyde Best for all of his accomplishments
both on and off island, Barbara Dillas founded Best wall projects and got Bermudian-based artists together, the vast majority of whom live in Somerset, to create a mural of Mr. Best and the
highlights of his career.

The mural will be on Clyde Best Lane in Sandys. The actual painting of the mural was supposed to commence last night, but when the artists came to work on it this morning, the wall had been
vandalized by graffiti. Messages sprayed were mostly gang-related and contained negative messages, which, according to Ms. Dillas, is the opposite of what the Best Wall project organization seeks to do.

“ We just want to get the community back together and this is one of the projects that we thought would start that,” Ms. Dillas, who herself taught in Somerset for almost 30 years, said. “
We do not want to be so negative and separatist and have got to show the positive side [of the Somerset community]. We are going to work with [what we have been given] and possibly
impose security, so that when the mural is completed, it will not be messed with again.”

According to the Best wall projects organization, their vision is to “design an internationally acclaimed art wall on Clyde Best Lane that evokes a sense of dignity, pride and unity in the local
community and inspires a future of achievement, hope and excellence in the youth of Somerset.”

Their mission is for “ community collaboration and active engagement by the Somerset Cricket Club and Somerset community members . . . to use visual art and words of affirmation to enliven
Clyde Best Lane from its current state into a wall that beautifies the neighborhood, attracts visitors, uplifts and educates the residents of Somerset, Bermuda and the world at large.”
