Recently, the Government of Bermuda held its first Public Service Community Clean-up event in partnership with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB).
Employee volunteers from various Government Ministries and Departments came together to clear approximately 6,680 pounds of litter and illegally dumped bulk waste from multiple sections of the railway trail and roadsides in Ferry Reach, Warwick, Southampton, and Somerset in preparation for the annual Convex End to End annual charity walk, scheduled this year for May 6th.
The “Clean & Green Public Service Community Clean Up” was a Government Employees Wellness Programme initiative to promote healthy lifestyle choices, holistic wellness, and team building amongst Public Service employees.
Traci Burgess, Executive Director for Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB), said, “KBB is pleased to know that caring for the environment is at the forefront of Government’s objectives. Human health and the physical condition of our natural environment are closely connected. We need clean and green spaces to enable us to be more active and help us to lead healthier lifestyles.”
Ms. Burgess added, “The impact of last week’s event was huge! There were a lot of logistics that went into coordinating and leading large groups of clean-up activities at the same time at multiple locations across the island. We are thankful for the volunteer coordinators, team leaders and everyone who contributed to the phenomenal results we achieved.”
The Head of the Public Service, Dr. Derrick Binns, said, “As Bermuda’s largest employer, it is essential that we do our part as an organization to improve and sustain the health of our surrounding community and environment. We appreciate the efforts of the teams of public service employees for participating in this event which ultimately betters Bermuda.”
