With the festive season nearly upon us, the City of Hamilton is excited to announce its 2021 Christmas programming, with events that are guaranteed to bring holiday cheer!
And nothing signifies the start of the Christmas season more than a visit from Santa himself and hot chocolate around the iconic City Christmas tree!
The City invites you to stop by City Hall for Rockin’ Around the City Tree on Friday November 26th from 7:00pm till 9:00pm. Join Santa for some free, festive and physically distanced photo ops.
A professional photographer will be on hand to take the portraits which families can take away with them as a special holiday keepsake. Complimentary Santa hats and cups of hot chocolate from Brew will be given to attendees.
The City had to once again pivot away from its annual tree lighting event and adopt a different format for the evening as per COVID-19 restrictions.
The City encourages families to make a night of it and add a stop at a City restaurant for dinner or tackle some holiday shopping with a City retailer before heading to the event.
In the spirit of giving, on-site donations will be encouraged to charitable partner, Tomorrow’s Voices – Bermuda Autism Early Intervention Centre, which has been a longstanding collaborator of the annual tree lighting ceremony. Tomorrow’s Voices has partnered with the City for many years at the annual Tree of Lights event.
Designed to meet the needs of those diagnosed with autism and on the autism spectrum, the contribution to the Bermuda community that Tomorrow’s Voices has made since its inception in 2007 has been invaluable as they help parents and guardians subsidize the therapeutic costs associated with their child’s developmental needs.
The public is reminded that physical distancing, mask-wearing and safety measures will be in place. While Santa will have a prominent place in the family portraits, the City confirms that he’ll also be sufficiently physically distanced.
Senior Events and Marketing Coordinator at the City, Tamara Bradshaw, said, “The Tree of Lights event has always been a highly anticipated event as it is the official way that the City welcomes Christmas to Hamilton. While we are unable to have the event continue in its usual format due to safety measures, we’re still able to offer a special experience for everyone, especially the kids.”
The City is also excited to host a three-night Fresh Air Films: Drive-In Pajama Jam, under the stars, on the top level of Bull’s Head Car Park, December 10th – 12th in partnership with title sponsor HSBC Bermuda. Each night guests will enjoy a drive-through photobooth, live activities, prize giveaways and a double header of holiday films, all from the comfort of their vehicles.
“HSBC is extremely excited to be a part of this event again this year,” said Tanya Bule, Head of Wealth and Personal Banking & Marketing. “We hope the community will come out and enjoy what is going to be an incredibly fun weekend. Not only will it provide an enjoyable way for all of us to celebrate the holidays, but it also will give much needed support to Hamilton’s retailers and other establishments after a tough couple of years.”
Friday, December 10th will feature Home Alone 2 at 7:00pm followed by Love Actually at 9:30pm. Saturday, December 11th will feature The Grinch at 7:00pm, followed by Four Christmases at 9:30pm and Sunday, December 12th, will feature Elf at 3:00pm with This Christmas screening at 5:30pm. Gates will open one hour before the first screening on each night.
Entry to the event is simple – attendees must present a receipt valued at $35.00 or higher from a City retailer or boutique, an initiative that the City hopes will help to drive foot traffic through the doors of the City businesses. This same model was used for entry at the Taste of Bermuda event in October 2020 and generated a stimulus of $40,000 for the City eateries. Food and beverage vendors will be on-site with items available for purchase. While a SafeKey is not required for event entry, it will be required to visit the vendor area and restrooms.
Those wanting to show off their favorite comfy holiday sleepwear are encouraged to wear pajamas, get comfortable, and take in the merriment of the festive season as they enjoy some holiday classics.
The City of Hamilton has submitted an application to Government to hold the drive-in event as it will fall into the ‘30+ person’ category for attendance.
