City Donates to Bermuda Shrine Club

Earlier today, Mayor Gosling, City CEO Dwayne Caines and members of the City’s Social Committee, presented a cheque donation for $3,200 to the Bermuda Shrine Club. Each year, the City’s Social Committee selects a charity to donate funds collected at the City’s annual Christmas Party raffle.

The Bermuda Shrine Club raises money for local children in need of medical treatment abroad, as well as Bermudian helping agencies and charities.

Addressing the Bermuda Shrine Club today, Mayor Gosling said, “The choice of charity recipient is made entirely by the City staff which, to me, demonstrates the power of your outreach in the community, given that our staff recognize the positive impact you have on our island. Thank you for all the good work that you do.”

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Bermuda Shrine Club was the President of the Bermuda Shrine Club Mr. Martin Weekes.

Mr. Weekes said, “This donation from the City of Hamilton today will go a long way in helping us to help other people and, in particular, children in need of medical treatment abroad if, for example, they get into a serious road traffic accident. At the Bermuda Shrine Club, we aim to distribute our funds to those children most in need. We accumulate monetary donations which go towards helping young Bermuda residents requiring treatment for serious burns or cleft palate surgeries or in need of prosthetic limbs. We will pay for airfare and accommodation, while Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States take care of the treatment – all at no cost to the patient or their family.”

In the past, the Bermuda Shrine Club has also collected funds for the Family Centre, Meals on Wheels, and the Sunshine League.
