This afternoon, just before 3 p.m., a routine football match between the Devonshire Colts and Paget Lions at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club was abruptly shattered by a violent on-field incident that sent players, officials, and spectators into shock.
According to early reports, five men stormed onto the pitch just before the start of play, rushing directly toward a Paget player in what appeared to be a targeted attack. Witnesses say the men were armed with knives and other weapons as they chased the intended victim across the field.
Miraculously, the player managed to escape unharmed, sprinting away from his attackers until he could take cover. Spectators watched in disbelief as the chaotic scene unfolded, with many shouting for players to run.
By the time police arrived at the grounds, the attackers had already fled the scene. Officers immediately began securing the area as match officials scrambled to ensure players and spectators were safe.
With tensions high and the situation deemed unsafe, the match referee—supported by Bermuda Football Association officials—called off the game entirely. What had begun as a competitive afternoon fixture quickly turned into a scene of panic for the crowd in attendance.
TNN News believes that an investigation is underway. CCTV footage from the sports club will be reviewed as authorities work to identify the individuals involved and determine the motive behind the attempted attack.
