In the second installment of TNN News’ interview with Channel 82 Crimson Media Productions Manager and media entrepreneur Lamone Woods shared his personal journey of overcoming obstacles and making life-changing decisions, offering encouragement to young Black men and others who may be struggling to find direction.
Speaking openly about his experiences, Woods reflected on a defining moment in February 1989 when he sat in a meeting with his teachers, and school administrators at The Berkeley Institute.
“I was at a stage where I was acting up a little bit,” Woods recalled. “That day I made a decision to walk off Berkeley Hill, get a job, and start working.”
Woods revealed that while many people associate him with Berkeley, he did not complete his final year at the school. However, years later, life came full circle when he returned to Berkeley as an educator and eventually received honorary alumni status.
“People may not know that I walked off that hill,” Woods said. “The funny thing is, I went back and worked there years later, and they gave me honorary Berkeley alumni status. I have all the privileges and the plaque to go with it.”
Following his departure from school, Woods spent approximately 15 years working in appliance repair, fixing stoves, refrigerators, and other household equipment. During that time, he developed a reputation for being ambitious and always seeking opportunities for growth.
He recalled approaching a manager about moving into a management position after proving himself as a skilled technician. However, he was discouraged by a response that suggested some people were only meant to perform certain roles.
“I told the manager I wanted to move into management,” Woods explained. “The response was that some people are meant to do certain things. Something in my spirit didn’t feel right about that.”
Rather than allowing that conversation to limit his ambitions, Woods used it as motivation. He returned to school in Toronto, earning a degree in Electronics Engineering before later obtaining a Master’s Degree in Business.
His determination eventually led him back to the same company where he had once worked as a technician—this time in an executive position.
From there, another opportunity emerged when The Berkeley Institute offered him a position teaching Computer Science. Woods said the decision was driven in part by a desire to spend more time with his oldest daughter, who was living in Canada at the time.
“I thought teaching would give me summers and holidays to spend with my daughter,” he said. “What I didn’t know was that I would love teaching.”
That teaching career introduced him to video production and robotics, ultimately sparking an entrepreneurial journey that would lead to the creation of his videography business and eventually Channel 82 Crimson Media.
Today, Woods is pursuing yet another chapter in his life as he works toward becoming a lawyer and to be called to the bar here in Bermuda.
Throughout the interview, Woods emphasized that success is built through focus, consistency, and the willingness to make and stand by difficult decisions.
“Focus is the key,” he said. “Where you put your focus tells you where you’re going to be.”
Woods explained that he has always relied on vision to guide his actions, imagining future accomplishments long before they become reality.
“I see things before they happen,” he said. “I saw myself graduating. I see myself standing in front of Parliament when I become a lawyer. I focus on the vision and keep working toward it.”
He encouraged young people to remain committed to their goals, understanding that success often takes years of consistent effort.
“Persistence is key. Consistency is key,” Woods said. “If you want something, you have to stay focused on it until it becomes a reality.”
He also stressed the importance of developing strong decision-making skills.
“Making decisions is like building a muscle,” Woods explained. “Sometimes you’ll make the wrong decision, but then you have to learn from it and make another decision. You have to be willing to stand on your decisions.”
According to Woods, the path to success begins with having a clear vision, maintaining focus, and making choices that align with long-term goals.
As he concluded his message to Bermuda’s youth, Woods left viewers with a lesson shaped by decades of personal experience.
“It’s not how you start,” he said. “It’s the decisions you make in between. Have a vision, focus on that vision, make solid decisions, and stand by them. That’s what helps you get where you want to be.”
The interview serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define a person’s future and that determination, discipline, and perseverance can open doors to opportunities once thought impossible.
