As the sun set over Cedar Avenue this evening, the atmosphere was already buzzing with excitement as families and longtime spectators prepared for Bermuda Day festivities. Widely considered one of the liveliest viewing spots for the Bermuda Day Half Marathon, and parade, the avenue was lined with tents, chairs, coolers, and generations of Bermudians eager to continue cherished traditions.
Among those setting up early was longtime spectator Roderick Nesbitt , whose family has been gathering along Cedar Avenue for more than four decades.
“I think it’s beautiful once it’s all done, Nesbitt said while preparing his family’s viewing area. “But the hassle is that some people forget that people’s been here for a long time, and seniors have been here for a long time, and they just jump in and have no respect. But other than that, it’s a fantastic holiday.”
Nesbitt explained that his family has been part of the Cedar Avenue tradition since the route first began coming through the area.
“My family has been out here for 40-something years,” he said proudly.
When asked whether Bermuda Day or Cup Match holds the title as his favorite holiday,Nesbitt didn’t hesitate.
“Cup Match,” he laughed. “I celebrate Cup Match the first day like my birthday. My birthday is January 19th, but I celebrate Cup Match the first day like it’s my birthday.”
Despite his love for Cup Match, Bermuda Day remains a major family affair. Nesbitt said his wife, mother, and late mother-in-law have all shared in the tradition over the years.
“Back then, you could come out at 5 o’clock and set your spot up, and you wouldn’t have to worry,” he recalled. “Now you have to do it May 1st or something like that.”
As for tomorrow’s race, Nesbitt says he’s not placing any bets on winners — he’s simply there to enjoy the spirit of the event.
“I enjoy the slow runners more because they impress me,” he said with a smile. “You see them a little longer.”
With camp spots already settling in and anticipation building across Cedar Avenue, Bermuda is clearly ready for another memorable Bermuda Day celebration. Happy Safe Bermuda Day All.
