Canadian Woman Accused of Importing $1.9M Worth of Cannabis Remanded into Custody

A 21-year-old Canadian national appeared before Magistrate Maria Sofianos in Magistrates’ Court this morning facing two indictable drug-related offences.

Yemariam Teshome  of Ontario, Canada was not required to enter a plea to the charges, which stem from allegations arising on June 21 in Bermuda.

Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney told the court that the woman was allegedly found in possession of a controlled drug, namely cannabis, on June 21 at the L.F.Wade International Airportin the Islands of Bermuda.

A second charge alleges that on the same date, at the L.F. Wade International Airport in St. George’s Parish, she possessed cannabis with the intent to supply.

Mr. Mahoney informed the court that the drugs allegedly carried an estimated street value of more than $1.9 million and weighed approximately 24 pounds.

As the matters are indictable offences, the defendant was not required to enter pleas. The court heard that her travel document has been seized and lodged with the court.

The woman was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the August Monthly Arraignment Session of the Supreme Court on August 3, 2026.

She is represented by defence attorney Paul Wilson.
