In less than a month, Bermuda has recorded two fatal road collisions where drivers are suspected of being under the influence of alcohol — reigniting public calls for tougher penalties and legislative reform to address what many are calling a growing crisis on the island’s roads.
The message is clear: enough is enough.
Community advocates and media voices, including the TNN News outlet, are urging lawmakers to act decisively and reclassify road deaths involving impaired drivers as vehicular homicide — arguing that drunk driving resulting in death should be treated as murder, not a mere traffic offense.
“When is the law going to change?” one advocate asked passionately. “If individuals are believed or suspected of driving under the influence and cause a fatality, that’s not an accident — it’s a deliberate act of recklessness. Our laws need to reflect that.”
Despite repeated campaigns and public awareness efforts, the issue persists. The courts continue to see a rise in drunk driving cases, with some offenders facing what many consider lenient penalties — fines of around $1,500 and 18-month driving bans.
“We’ve even seen guest workers and other professionals coming before the courts for drunk driving,” the advocate continued. “Something needs to change. Legislation needs to change. The current system isn’t deterring this dangerous behavior.”
According to available statistics, year-over-year drunk driving cases are climbing, suggesting a worsening trend despite enforcement and education initiatives.
Advocates say it’s time for Parliament to strengthen road safety laws, implement harsher sentences for offenders, and increase public accountability for those who choose to drink and drive.
“We are losing lives. Families are being destroyed. This is not just careless driving — it’s criminal,” the statement concluded. “We at TNN will continue to advocate for those who have lost their lives to suspected drunk drivers. It’s time for Bermuda to get serious about this.”
