C.O.H Workers Allege Racist Workplace Slur; Staff Demand Accountability

TNN News has learned of allegations of a workplace incident at the Corporation of Hamilton that has left a number of employees upset and demanding accountability.

According to Corporation employees who spoke with TNN News, on condition of anonymity said the incident allegedly occurred on Monday within the Parks Department, where a supervisor, described as a foreign worker who is currently serving a probationary period, allegedly referred to two Black co-workers as “little monkeys.”

The employee claims another co-worker overheard the remark and immediately challenged the supervisor, asking who he was referring to. The supervisor allegedly responded that he was referring to the two other workers, prompting the employee to confront him and tell him such language was unacceptable.

According to the employee, the supervisor later attempted to explain the comment by claiming he had been referring to his own children as “little monkeys.” However, the employee disputes that explanation and alleges an email documenting the incident was subsequently submitted to management.

TNN News was also told that a meeting involving Corporation staff and Chief Executive Officer Dwayne Caines will be held today to discuss the matter. According to the employee, the CEO met with some staff individually and collectively to hear their concerns and explained that while the alleged comments were unacceptable from a human perspective, management also had a responsibility to follow the appropriate employment process.

The employees said many staff members left the meeting dissatisfied, believing stronger disciplinary action should be taken. Workers are reportedly calling for transparency regarding any disciplinary measures and are also urging the Corporation to require diversity, sensitivity, or cultural awareness training if the supervisor remains employed.

The employees described morale among staff as low, saying workers are angry, uncomfortable, and concerned about continuing to work under the supervisor following the alleged incident.

At the time of publication, TNN News understands the supervisor remains employed.
