BUEI Talks: Island SOS Bermuda – Protecting the Sargasso Sea

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s eight-part Island SOS (Sustainable Ocean Strategies)
series continues Sunday, April 2nd at 3:00 PM with a presentation from Bermuda’s own ‘Sargasso Girl’,
Fae Sapsford!

Running monthly, BUEI Talks: ‘Island SOS’ aims to highlight forward thinking Ocean Development initiatives from islands across the globe. Each ‘Island SOS’ talk focuses on a singular island nation and topic, ranging from ideas of zero waste management to sustainable tourism.

This month’s presentation by Fae Sapsford will spotlight Bermuda and the protection of the Sargasso Sea.
As a Science Communicator and Marine Research Fellow with the Sargasso Sea Commission (SSC), Fae will discuss the ecology of the Sargasso Sea, its connections to Bermuda, how it is governed, and how it can
be sustainably managed through international mechanisms.

During her talk, Fae will also introduce ‘GO-SEA’, a scientific organisation that encourages getting protective measures in place regarding the Sargasso Sea. As Chapter Leader of the ‘GO-SEA’ project in
Bermuda, Fae collects data on oceanic organisms in our Island’s waters.

A BUEI Spokesperson said, “The Sargasso Sea is a spawning site for many threatened and endangered oceanic species as well as commercial fish. Bermuda’s oceans have and will continue to be an integral part of our cultural identity and as an isolated island in the western Sargasso Sea, we hope this talk encourages conversation around the ways in which we can do our part to nurture and sustain our local oceanic environment.”

Each ‘Island SOS’ takes place live for an in-person audience at BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium with our overseas guests presenting via video link.
