The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) announces that Karla Lacey will be stepping down from her role as CEO after more than four years at the helm, effective March 31, 2025.
Ms. Lacey is leaving to pursue other interests and will continue her connection with the organisation by serving as Senior Advisor to the annual Youth Climate Summit, now entering its fifth year.
During her time as CEO, Karla significantly enhanced BUEI’s profile and established a culture of excellence, culminating in record fundraising efforts and strong community engagement through events such as The Ripple Effect, World Water Day, World Ocean Day and the Youth Climate Summit. Under her leadership, BUEI strengthened and diversified income streams and expanded its ability to attract new grants for its educational programmes.
“Karla has guided BUEI since 2021, taking us out of COVID to where we are now,” said Will Cox and Ronald Stan, Co-Chairs of BUEI’s Board of Directors. “One of her many accomplishments has been fostering an energised workplace and developing a solid team to support her as she worked to raise community awareness of the important work that BUEI does and to position BUEI as a key player in the space we occupy. We are relevant to so many people for so many reasons now.”
Traci Burgess, who joined BUEI in 2024 as Head of Programmes and Administration, will succeed Karla as CEO starting April 1, 2025. For more than two decades, she has worked with local charities focused on youth and the environment and championed their causes to create a positive impact.
“Traci brings deep experience and focus in the not-for-profit sector in Bermuda and is passionate about BUEI and her work,” said the Co-Chairs. “The Board of Directors is confident that Traci’s expertise and passion for BUEI’s mission will continue to drive future success.”
