BTA staff contend, “Board should have done more”

Accusations that inaction by the Board of the Bermuda Tourism Authority has led to a culture of toxicity and a hostile work environment at the organisation.

Following the departure of Wayne Caines as the BTA Board Chairman, a number of former BTA employees have been reaching out to TNN, expressing their feelings and opinions on just why the entity charged with managing the island’s tourism sector has become an undesirable workplace.

Speaking on condition that we not name them one former worker told us, “Despite enjoying my role at BTA, collaborating with teammates, and the incredible opportunity to promote Bermuda, the overall negative atmosphere became more of a burden than a motivation to show up to work.”

“Unfortunately, it began to take a toll on me, ultimately leading to my decision to resign. This was because some, not all, of the leadership and their inability to recognize how their behavior affected the office environment.”

Another former employee argued, “Most of the BTA leadership team lacks the character and conviction to stand for what is right. They continuously prioritize their interests over employee wellbeing.”

“It took too long for the bullying allegations to be investigated. The board failed the employees of the BTA and the offenders are still employed at the organization.”

“It was a toxic workplace culture due to members of the leadership that portrayed disrespectful, unethical, and verbally abusive behavior.”

Other workers contend there exists at the BTA is a culture of “Do as I say” and “Ignore what I do”, while also claiming there was a complete lack of communication from the top down.

Another former worker lamented “The Bermuda Tourism Authority has fostered a toxic work environment characterized by high turnover and a culture of unchecked negative behavior despite numerous complaints, both documented and verbal.”

The actions of a senior member of management particularly cricised as contributing to an environment of distrust and lack of accountability. Behavior, which has purportedly been cited by former employees as a reason for their departure. Actions which allegedly included bullying, discriminatory comments, unreasonable demands and just overall rude and unfair behaviour.

The former BTA staff expressed by the view that urgent action is needed to address these issues and ensure a healthier, more accountable workplace moving forward.

As TNN first reported a private entity was hired to complete a culture review of the BTA in light of these and other complaints which have led to more than twenty staff resigning in the last two years. Many of them receiving significant payoffs and made to sign non-disclosure agreements.
