Smith’s Sixers scored their first points at this year’s Bermuda Smash Invitational without breaking a sweat or even a blade of grass, as persistent rains washed out Tuesday’s match, leaving both teams high and dry, with a no-result and five points awarded to each.
The league’s basement dwellers, led by Onias Bascome, were supposed to square off with defending champions Hamilton Parish Hurricanes in both teams’ final round-robin clash before the knockout drama begins.
“Due to persistent rainfall and unplayable conditions, today’s Bermuda Smash Invitational fixture has been cancelled,” was the word from the BSI. “In accordance with tournament playing conditions, both teams will be awarded five points.”
As a result, Sixers are set as the fourth-placed franchise going into Friday’s semifinals, when they will face the winners of the round robin phase.
The battle for top seed heats up Wednesday as the unbeaten Pembroke Panthers prowl into a showdown against the once-nipped Sandys Spartans, with Panthers as odds-on favourites to keep their perch at the top.
