Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) plans to enter into a work to rule action on Friday, June 11 after what appeared to be a lack of communication with the topic of decertification on the table, a memo recently revealed.
According to the memo, the BIU’s general Council had two meetings to discuss the Trade Union and Labor Relations Consolidation Act of 2021. One meeting was held on May 19 and the other was held on June 1.
The BIU’s concerns regarding this act, the memo read, surrounded the particular section that would allow non-union members to participate in union decertification.
“This is something that the BIU disagreed with back in 1998 . . . and that we still disagree with today,” it read.
Premier the Honorable David Burt sent a letter to the BIU’s General President Chris Furbert, requesting that he and Minister of Labor, the Honorable Jason Hayward, be allowed to speak to the union’s General Council on the decertification issue, in order to “ensure that we do not have a labor dispute in this country at a time when we can least afford it.”
After almost three hours of discussion and debate between the two parties on Monday June 7, Premier Burt and Minister Hayward left the room, leaving the General Council relatively unsatisfied with the resolution.
“ [After the meeting], the BIU’s General Council moved a motion that a work to rule and an overtime ban be implemented as of Friday June 11, for all BIU members,” the memo read.
“ This position will be reviewed in one week and if there is no resolution, we will consider further industrial action.”
