BIU responds to Ongoing Dispute and Work-to-Rule Action at RUBiS Energy Bermuda

The Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) wishes to publicly acknowledge the commitment of its members in standing firm and demonstrating their dedication through ongoing efforts to resolve the outstanding issues surrounding the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Since November 20th, our members have been working-to-rule, they remain resolute in their belief that they are entitled to fair treatment and recognition for their hard work.

The BIU has engaged in numerous meetings with management regarding the CBA negotiations, demonstrating a willingness to resolve the matter through dialogue.

Unfortunately, the response from management has been less than satisfactory, leading to continued frustration amongst our members.

The following concerns have contributed to the ongoing tensions:

1. Management’s Disrespect: Management has directed non-unionized staff to perform tasks traditionally handled by unionized workers, undermining the role of our members and showing a lack of respect for the terms of the collective agreement.

2. Excessive Work Hours: Managers have been doing union members jobs for the past 3 weeks, working 18 plus hours a day to deliver propane, violating safety procedures that require adequate time for rest and proper training to perform said tasks.

3. Management’s Reluctance to Reengage: Despite the BIU being fully open to Negotiations, management have refused to return to the bargaining table in good faith to address the wage concerns raised.

It is important to clarify that the work-to-rule action, initiated by our members on November 20th, was not linked to the work stoppage that took place last Monday. The members downed tools after management stated they would no longer compensate the worker involved in an industrial incident on October 9th—an action that raised significant concerns.

Furthermore, the ongoing frustration amongst our members is compounded by management’s

recent downsizing efforts and cost-cutting measures, which have been seen as detrimental to

both staff morale and operational efficiency.

The BIU remains open to further dialogue and is committed to finding a fair resolution for all

parties involved. However, it is crucial that management acknowledges the concerns of our

members and return to the bargaining table to settle these issues once and for all.
