Sir John Swan was laid to rest today, weeks after the passing of one of Bermuda’s most influential leaders and entrepreneurs. As family, friends, and members of the community gathered to honor his life and legacy, Bishop Reverend Vernon G. Lambe reflected on the profound impact Sir John had on Bermuda and beyond.
Describing Sir John as “a tremendous gift,” Bishop Lambe said his influence extended far beyond the island’s shores.
“What a tremendous gift he was, not just to his country, but to the world, really,” said Bishop Lambe. “His gifting and business acumen made him an example and a model of what can happen when people from humble beginnings rise to the levels that he had risen.”
Bishop Lambe, who shared similar roots with Sir John, spoke warmly of their longstanding relationship and the pride he felt watching his fellow “back-of-town boy” achieve remarkable success.
“I’m very proud of him,” he said. “I’ve told him many times just how proud I’ve been of the way God caused him to excel and represent what a real business model is all about.”
While acknowledging the loss being felt by Sir John’s loved ones, Bishop Lambe offered prayers for comfort and strength.
“It’s not easy on family when a person dedicates themselves to a community and renders service on the level that he did,” he said. “I pray that his family would be strengthened and comforted during this difficult time.”
Looking ahead, Bishop Lambe expressed confidence that Sir John’s contributions have left Bermuda on solid footing.
“We look to the future knowing that he has laid a good foundation. Bermuda is going to be fine,” he said. “Bermuda is a better place today because of the hard work and contributions Sir John made for this country.”
He noted that society often reflects more deeply on a person’s accomplishments after their passing, but said Sir John’s legacy deserves continued recognition and appreciation.
“A family has made a tremendous investment in this country, and we shall never be able to fully repay them for that kind of deposit into this community,” Bishop Lambe said. “Bermuda is better for having had him as a model, an entrepreneur, and a leader of a nation.”
As Bermuda bids farewell to Sir John Swan, many will remember him not only for his achievements in business and public service, but also for the lasting example he set for future generations.
