Bermudian Charged with Assault and Strangulation in UK Magistrates Court

A Bermudian national appeared before Northamptonshire Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning facing charges two counts of assault, battery, and strangulation following an alleged domestic incident in the United Kingdom.

Gavaska Bascome pleaded not guilty to the charges during his court appearance. The court denied bail, and he was remanded into custody at Northamptonshire County Prison pending further proceedings.

Bascome is scheduled to appear before Crown Court, the higher court in England’s judicial system, on July 30, where he will face trial on the strangulation and assault allegations.

According to information obtained, Bascome departed Bermuda on a British Airways flight on Monday evening after being released from prison in Bermuda in early April. It is understood that Bascome was released early from West Gate Correctional Facility without the approval of Court Services.

Sources indicate that upon arriving in the UK, Bascome was met at the airport by a young woman he had reportedly known for approximately three years while incarcerated. Authorities allege that within 12 hours of his arrival on British soil, a domestic dispute occurred that resulted in charges relating to assault and battery, strangulation, and grievous bodily harm.

The Magistrate read out the charges as Bascome denied all the charges.

Further details are expected to emerge as the case proceeds through the British court system.
