Bermuda Spelling Bee Competition Finals Coming Soon

The buzz in the air grows louder and louder as Bermuda excitedly awaits the Final of the BermudaSpelling Bee competition which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 8th March.

The competition has been open to Bermuda’s public, home-schooled and private school children aged 9-13 and is designed to enhance not only their spelling skills, but also their cognitive, literacy and life skills. Participating students have been equipped with tools that will help them to develop a rich vocabulary and to express themselves with clarity and confidence.

Twenty-six of the Island’s schools entered students in the Semi-Finals of the competition, with the schools divided into three Regions, Eastern, Central and Western, because of the large number of participants.The Semi-Finals were held simultaneously at three locations on Sunday, 2nd February.

Eastern Region – CedarBridge Academy

Central Region – The Berkeley Institute

Western Region – Bermuda College

The names of the top three spellers in each of the hotly-contested Semi-Finals follow:

Eastern Region: First Place, Skanka Sarvanan, Harrington Sound Primary School; Second Place, Jared Arnante, Somersfield Academy; Third Place, Conor Lim, Somersfield Academy

Central Region: First Place, George Morris, DellwoodMiddle School; Second Place, Samantha Hernandez,Dellwood Middle School; Third Place, Eli Oduntan, Saltus Grammar School

Western Region: First Place, Olivia Brown, Warwick Academy; Second Place, Shane Gilbert, Dalton E. Tucker Primary School; Third Place, Leyana Williams, Warwick Academy.

The Organizing Committee, chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice the Hon. Norma WadeMiller,wishes to thank the young spellers’ families and teachers and the many other members of the publicwho volunteered to officiate during the Semi-Finals, in particular Chief Judges, former Ombudsman Arlene Brock, Director of Public Prosecutions Cindy Clarke and physician Dr. Stanley James, and Spell Masters,attorney Kyle Masters, retired primary school principal Mary Lodge and The Berkeley Institute senior teacher of English and former deputy principal SandraBurrows.
