Bermuda has experienced an extended period of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and unsettled weather since late Saturday, with conditions continuing into today.
Meteorologist Phil Roger’s says the weather is the result of a cold front that moved down along the east coast of Canada before reaching Bermuda and eventually becoming stationary over the island.
Roger’s says the front began affecting Bermuda late Saturday and continued through Sunday and Monday, bringing persistent rain and thunderstorms.
He says the frontal system remains stalled just south of Bermuda and will continue to produce precipitation today, although the threat of thunderstorms is expected to be lower.
According to Roger’s, approximately 243 millimetres of rain has been recorded, which is equivalent to just under six inches.
He described the rainfall total as significant for this time of year, explaining that the combination of a stationary front and warm ocean waters has contributed to the prolonged rainfall.
The rainfall has also created difficult conditions on Bermuda’s roads.
Motorists travelling from both the east and west ends of the island experienced significant traffic delays this morning, with some areas seeing traffic come to a virtual standstill.
Puddles and potholes have become additional hazards for motorists, with more rain expected before the current system begins to weaken.
Looking ahead, however, the hurricane outlook remains relatively quiet.
With schools scheduled to reopen tomorrow, there had been concerns about the possibility of tropical activity developing as Bermuda enters a more active period of the Atlantic hurricane season.
But Roger’s says there is currently little cause for concern.
He says the National Hurricane Center is not monitoring any systems that pose an immediate threat, and current forecast models are not indicating any significant chance of hurricane development over the coming week.
Phil Roger’s also says the Atlantic Basin could set a record for the latest first hurricane of the season, with conditions remaining relatively quiet for now.
Despite that positive outlook, residents are being reminded not to become complacent.
Bermuda remains in hurricane season, and weather conditions can change quickly.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, monitor official weather information and ensure that their hurricane preparations are in order should a tropical system eventually develop and threaten the island.
For now, Bermuda can expect more rainfall today, with conditions expected to gradually diminish later.
