Bermuda Remains Cautious as Post Tropical Cyclone Idalia Passes

Despite Post Tropical Cyclone Idalia moving away from our island, we continue to prioritise safety and caution as strong winds and unsettled weather linger in our area today.

Minister of National Security, Michael Weeks reassures residents: “While Idalia is on its way out, our commitment to your safety remains unwavering. We urge everyone to exercise a high level of caution, especially when travelling on our roads.”

Idalia is located in our south-southeast, and the next weather update from BWS is scheduled for 3.00 p.m.

The public is advised of the following updates:

• Flights: Skyport advises that all flights have been cancelled except today’s British Airways flight. Affected airlines will be operating extra flights on Sunday, 3 September, to assist those travelling. Travellers are encouraged to stay abreast of any changes to their travel plans by contacting their respective airlines. The airport is expected to remain open through the day. Skyport will continue to monitor weather conditions and any further impact on airport operations. Additional flight updates and advisories can be found on the LF Wade International Airport website at: bermudaairport.com

The Causeway remains open and continues to be closely monitored.

• Bus Services: The Department of Public Transportation has advised that due to weather and road conditions on some bus routes, services have been suspended as of 12 noon today until further notice. DPT will provide an update on when service will resume. For Updates and information, visit www.gov.bm/bus

• Ferry Services: The Department of Marine and Ports Services has suspended all ferry services until current weather conditions improve. The Department will provide updates on service resumption as the situation evolves.

• Road Safety: If you must move about the island, consider the persisting high winds with care and caution.

• Libraries: All public libraries have closed as of 12 noon.

As an added note, red warning signs have been placed along the South Shore, with additional signage to be erected along the North Shore due to unsafe water conditions.

Swimming is strongly discouraged due to adverse weather conditions. Lifeguards at Horseshoe Bay Beach have suspended operations for today. Further assessments will occur today and tomorrow to determine when the Lifeguard Service can safely resume operations.

As of the BWS 12 noon advisory, while Idalia’s closest point of approach has already passed, a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect.

Idalia was positioned 78 nautical miles to the east southeast of Bermuda, moving east at 8 knots, with maximum winds of 50 knots gusting to 60 knots.

The Emergency Measures Organisation continues to monitor the situation closely.

The cooperation and vigilance of our residents is greatly appreciated during this weather event. Please stay informed through official channels for ongoing updates.
