The Bermuda Principles Foundation, the only non-profit based on the legacy of the Bermuda Principles, is proud to announce the dates of its 5th Bermuda Principles Impact Conference in partnership with the Wellcome Sanger Institute, CariGenetics, BioQuest, and Wise Ancestors. Set to take place in Bermuda from February 25 – March 1, 2025, this conference will kick off the start of the 30th year of the Bermuda Principles agreement that has shaped the last 30 years of human and biodiversity genomic data sharing.
The Bermuda Principles, established in 1996 at the International Strategy Meeting on Human Genomic Sequencing, set a ground-breaking standard ensuring that all genetic data generated in the Human Genome Project was made publicly available within 24 hours. This principle has significantly accelerated the pace and depth of medical and biodiversity research, fostering unprecedented collaboration and innovation in the scientific community for the last 30 years.
The Bermuda Principles Impact Conference Series has previously gathered 200+ scientists from 2017-2020 from around the world to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Bermuda Principles. Bermuda is the home of these foundational principles of data sharing in science and will be the home of the Bermuda Principles 2.0 agreement.
This kick-off of the 30th year celebration will be in two parts:
Part 1 – A Pre-Conference Working Group Meeting (25 – 26 February 2025) – This Working Group will start discussions on the Bermuda Principles 2.0 that will shape the next 30 years of human and biodiversity genomic data sharing, covering topics such as: Data Sovereignty and National Security, Equitable Access and Inclusion, Diversity and Inclusivity in Research and Capacity Building, Training, Expertise Building.
Part 2 – Bermuda Principles Impact on Population Genomics (BPIPG) Conference (26 February – 1 March 2025) – Highlighting the significant strides and discoveries in this field, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in public engagement sessions, attend the esteemed Bermuda Principles Award Gala and present their work in a variety of scientific sessions covering: Population Genomics, Biodiversity’s Impact on Human Health, Cancer Genomics, Computational Genomics & the Use of AI, Complex Traits in Genomic Medicine, Functional Genomics and Emerging Methods & Technologies.
Dr Carika Weldon, a Bermuda geneticist, Founder of the Bermuda Principles Foundation and Founder and CEO of CariGenetics, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming conference: “The Bermuda Principles have been instrumental in shaping the global landscape of genetic research for the last three decades. When I founded the Bermuda Principles Foundation in 2016 I was determined to highlight the role Bermuda played in this huge decision that made medical advancements a reality for us all. It is an honour to put on this 2025 conference in the place where it all began with the support of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, which was directly involved in the Human Genome Project. We are excited to bring together leading scientists to celebrate these principles and to discuss the future of genomic data sharing.”
Dr Sarion Bowers, Head of Policy and Advocacy at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, said: “Sanger is thrilled to be involved in organising this conference. The Bermuda Principles are at the heart of all we do at the Sanger Institute, and this is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the scientists who were instrumental in shaping the field of genomics 30 years ago, and to use this opportunity to imagine how the next 30 years can deliver benefit for human and planetary health.”
Be a Part of the 30th Year Celebrations:
