Bermuda Powerboat Association Honors Pugi Raynor With Birthday Memorial Race at Dockyard

DOCKYARD, BERMUDA — The Bermuda Powerboat Association gathered at Cross Island in Dockyard today for a special memorial race and celebration of life honouring the late Rickai Pugi Raynor, who died earlier this year following a powerboat racing incident in Hamilton Harbour.

The event was particularly meaningful as it was held on Raynor’s birthday, bringing members of Bermuda’s powerboat racing fraternity together to celebrate his life and legacy.

One of the event’s organisers, Elizabeth Waldron, told TNN News that the gathering was held specifically to honour Raynor’s memory.

“Today is a special event. It’s the recall Rickai Pugy Raynor Memorial Race. Today also happens to be Pugi’s birthday, hence we had it on today. So yeah, we’re just running a special race in his memory.”

Raynor’s boat was prominently displayed during the event, along with his racing medal, providing a visual reminder of his involvement and contribution to Bermuda’s powerboat racing community.

Waldron said the turnout demonstrated the special place Raynor held within the racing fraternity.

“Pugi was part of our special community. He was one of a kind, and it means a lot. We’re grateful for the turnout.”

She also expressed appreciation to those who attended, donated and paid admission in support of the memorial.

The event also carried a fundraising component, with part proceeds going directly to Raynor’s children, Kylie and Koa Waldron said.

The memorial race served not only as a tribute to Raynor’s life, but also as an opportunity for the powerboat racing community to come together, remember a fellow racer and support his family.

The Bermuda Powerboat Association’s racing season will conclude next weekend at Spanish Point Boat Club.

According to Waldron, junior racing will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the main races at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Admission is $10, with the public encouraged to attend and support Bermuda’s powerboat racing community.

TNN News will continue to follow the Bermuda Powerboat Association and provide coverage of the final race day next weekend.
