Bermuda Municipal Election 2023 Candidates Are Set

There will be a two way race for the Mayoral chain in St. George’s in the upcoming Municipal Election on Thursday, 11th May, 2023. Meanwhile, sitting Mayor Charles Gosling will run unopposed for the post of Mayor in the Corporation of Hamilton race.

Today was Nomination Day for the elections which take place in both Municipalities on the 11th of next month.

In the east end polls, incumbent Mayor George Dowling, is being challenged by former Mayor, Quinnell Francis.

This could well be business owners residents in St. George’s and Hamilton vote to elect Corporation Members as Government is seeking to to abolish corporation elections and appoint unelected members to the Corporations going forward.

Whether that becomes a reality for the Corporation of Hamilton will be determined by the Law Lords at the Privy Council as that Corporation has mounted a last ditch effort to prevent what is essentially a takeover by the government. A ruling in that matter is not expected until at lease 2025.

the number of business ratepayers registered to vote in Hamilton, stands at 383. That’s down from the 423 registered at the last elections in 2019.

The number of Municipal resident voters is 576.

Meanwhile in St. George’s there are 47 business votes to be garnered and 1,317 Municipal residents registered to vote.
