Bermuda College has signed a new agreement with a US university that will give Bermudians increased access to quality education and address important national priorities for the island.
The deal with Kean University is the 40th overseas agreement signed by the College which has forged partnerships with accredited colleges and universities in Canada, the UK, US, and the West Indies/Caribbean, creating transfer pathways for Bermudian students to further their studies abroad.
Dr. Lamont O. Repollet, the President of Kean University, New Jersey’s urban research university, said: “This partnership represents a significant step in expanding access to high-quality education and fostering workforce development in Bermuda.
“Kean’s commitment to urban education and research uniquely positions us to help expand opportunities for academic and professional growth.
“Many Kean alumni already make meaningful contributions across Bermuda, and this partnership further strengthens our ability to create change and help foster a positive future for Bermudians.”
The agreement includes 2+2 academic pathways for aspiring teachers – two years at Bermuda College, two years at Kean University – as well as advanced degree opportunities, such as a Master’s and Doctorate in education.
It also establishes a strategic partnership to expand access to quality education and to address important national priorities for Bermuda.
Dr. David Sam, President of Bermuda College, said: “This is an excellent partnership that will serve College students well. In addition, it will fill part of the higher education gap on the island.”
That gap, said Dr Sam, related to vacancies at the senior school level in terms of teachers to deliver high quality instruction in STEM fields.
He said it was hoped that through various scholarship opportunities and financial aid packages to Bermuda College students, the partnership with Kean will enable aspiring teachers in STEM fields an affordable university experience.
Dr Sam added: “The agreement will facilitate a smoother transition for Bermuda College students to continue their education without unnecessary delays or impediments.
“By aligning our programmes, both institutions can work together to host joint workshops, professional development activities and new opportunities for faculty and student exchange.”
Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Bermuda College Dr. Ali Arouzi added: “By creating sustainable pathways for advanced degrees and certifications together through this partnership we can develop a robust structure that will assist Bermudian students in gaining the necessary competencies to excel in diverse fields relevant to Bermuda such as teacher training in STEM fields given the increasing demand for qualified educators as well as offering advanced degree opportunities such as Master’s and Doctorate degrees.”
