Bermuda Celebrates Philippine Independence Day

Strengthening community and cultural ties”, were the sentiments shared yesterday, by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Sen. the Hon. Owen K. Darrell, JP, when he attended the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence Day at Victoria Park.

 

On behalf of the Government, Minister Darrell provided well wishes and extended congratulations to the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda and its PresidentRyan De Jesus for hosting a welcoming communityevent.

Minister Darrell said, “It’s wonderful to see so many people gathered in celebration of community, family, and country. It’s also great to celebrate our cultural diversity and unity within our community. I am grateful to be part of today’s celebrations in solidarity with our Philippine community who contribute greatly to the rich tapestry of our cultural landscape.

 

“This year during Heritage Month, I was ecstatic to see the return of the Philippine Association’s Bermuda Day parade dancers and float after a 15-year hiatus. I thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant and colorful presentation, which complemented our record-high number of parade participants. I can remember the crowd roaring with excitement during the Bermuda Day Parade when the vibrant dancers came down the street with their incredibly precise choreography and award-winning float.”

 

Minister Darrell also participated in the festivities during Sunday’s celebrations, including dancing and feasting on the unique cuisine on offer.

 

Minister Darrell concluded, “As we celebrate the 126thAnniversary of Filipino independence, we also acknowledge the contributions of the Filipino community here in Bermuda. Your hard work, dedication, and vibrant cultural expressions have enriched our island, fostering a deeper appreciation and connection between our two countries. You have brought with you not just your skills and talents but the warmth and generosity that are the hallmarks of your culture. May this special day be filled with joy, pride, and festive moments. We look forward to celebrating with you and honoring the freedom and unity that make the Philippines truly remarkable.”
