BELCO Workers and Trash Collectors Allegedly Contracted the Coronavirus

Word coming to TNN suggesting that, with the revelation of 79 new cases of the Coronavirus on Tuesday by the Department of Health, TNN has received information from a reliable source that five linemen at BELCO has tested positive for what is believed to be the highly contagious delta Variant.

BELCO President Wayne Caines responded to TNN in a statement below.

“With the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane season approaching, the Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) is taking a proactive approach to be prepared for any storms that may impact Bermuda.

Part of the Company’s preparation includes the health and wellness of staff. With the number of Covid cases rising on the island, BELCO staff are being offered onsite Covid testing as a precautionary measure to ensure all essential workers are fit and healthy so that they can address any hurricane related outages should Bermuda be impacted by a storm. Residents can log onto www.belco.bm for more information and tips on preparing for hurricanes.”

And concerning inquiry on the BELCO Staff with Covid, “BELCO will not comment on the health of staff as such matters are private.”

The Ministry of Public Works’ trash department has an outbreak and by now, contact tracers should have tested everyone at the facility for the virus.

TNN sent inquiries to the Department of Communication and Information DCI, and their response was,

The Ministry of Public Works can advise that regular trash collection continues as scheduled.

As has been shared previously, the Ministry of Health does not comment on individual cases.
