BELCO Reminder to Call Before You Dig –

Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (“BELCO”) today issued a reminder to members of the public and contractors to call before they dig or trench, especially when in the vicinity of visible BELCO infrastructure. Additionally, underground cables may exist even in areas where no BELCO infrastructure may be readily visible.

As a reminder, contacting BELCO before digging or trenching is a requirement outlined in the Bermuda Occupational Safety & Health Regulations. The regulations stipulate that any service that may impose a hazard is shut off or disconnected and if this is not possible then the utility must be on site to supervise excavations.

Please call BELCO at least five (5) working days before digging or trenching and BELCO staff will make an appointment to visit the site and ensure that if there are underground cables in the planned excavation/trenching area that they are located, and the area/route marked.

This is a free service and helps keep workers safe while also preventing possible interruption to electricity supply should cables be cut.

BELCO’s Managing Director of Transmission, Distribution and Retail Shelly Leman said: “At BELCO we take the health and safety of our staff and the public very seriously. Digging near BELCO cables could not only pose a significant safety risk but could also cause damage to our infrastructure as well as power outages. Please, call BELCO before you dig.”

For more information and to schedule an appointment please email info@belco.bm or call 295-5111.
