Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) has successfully maintained its certification to the ISO 14001:2015 Standard for Environmental Management Systems. BELCO has been certified to the Standard since 2010.
The registration renewal audit was carried out by Canada-based Certech Registration Inc. (Certech) between June 22-25.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) publishes International Standards developed by experts covering nearly all industries around the world. ISO, which is based out of Switzerland, has members from 161 countries.
ISO 14001:2015 is the International Standard for environmental management systems. The Standard provides BELCO with a framework to protect the environment and respond to changing environmental conditions in balance with socio-economic needs. BELCO’s certification to ISO 14001 reinforces the organization’s aim of contributing to the environmental pillar of sustainability.
In addition to meeting legal obligations, the Standard helps BELCO to improve resource efficiency, reduce waste, and consistently manage its environmental responsibilities.
During the renewal audit the environmental aspects of air emissions and fuel consumption related to the Transmission Distribution & Retail Grid Operations activity of Operating Engines & Turbines were reviewed. Compliance evidence was reviewed against the following criteria and based on evidence at the time of the audit were acceptable:
BELCO’s Operating License OL-114 dated March 21, 2021, Clean Air Act 1991, Water Resources Act 1975, Pembroke Marsh Control Act, W&E Waste Management Guidelines, Ministry of Environment RBCA Soil Clean-up Guidelines and Petroleum Tank Registrations and a third party environmental compliance audit.
In the report, Certech commented: “BELCO management continue to demonstrate their strong support for the implemented environmental management system.”
BELCO President Wayne Caines said: “I’m pleased to report that BELCO continues to maintain our ISO 14001 Certification. BELCO is committed to environmental sustainability and is working towards becoming a renewable energy company. This certification demonstrates how our environmental management system has been embraced by our staff and become embedded in our corporate culture.
The ISO Standard helps us to meet the expectations of our employees, customers, shareholders and industry stakeholders. I would like to thank all our dedicated employees who contribute to this success daily and continue to commit to the ongoing improvement and maintenance of BELCO’s Environmental Management System and integrated Health & Safety Management System.”
