Saturday’s Eastern Counties Cup first-round clash has “upset brewing” written all over it … except this time, the plot twist is that Bailey’s Bay—the supposed underdogs—are actually the ones holding the aces. The challengers are favourites; the champions, Cleveland County, are the ones sweating under the spotlight.
Bay will enter the contest as challengers on paper, but likely with a lineup that looks more like an All-Star team.
Indications are Bay is set to stack their XI with as many as six guest players, with an abundance of national team members. Delray Rawlins, Derrick Brangman, Zeko Burgess, Tre Manders, Sinclair Smith, and Malachi Jones are strongly likely to be included.
That injection of talent would immediately make Bay the team to beat, allowing them to bat deep, bowl with attacking variety, and field aggressively, while keeping the side well balanced.
The guest player boost would provide experience and match-winners across all departments, offering a strong chance to knock off the holders early.
Meanwhile, the reigning Eastern Counties champions, while sure to be challenge-laden themselves, will be without their talisman, legendary all-rounder Dion Stovell.
Losing Stovell is not just losing runs and wickets … it is losing leadership, big-match temperament, and a player able to single-handedly turn a game.
In Stovell’s absence, Cleveland’s middle order and bowling attack lose a lot of balance, leaving the side more exposed.
They will have to rely on their core group to step up and for younger players to fill the void. The champs still have pedigree and have demonstrated an ability to win tight games, but this is the first time in years they’ll take the field without their best player.
Cleveland used seven guest players to win the trophy last year, but may not be able to host as many this time around, with Stovell gone and Jason Anderson a question mark due to a lack of form.
Still, with mercenaries like Allan Douglas Jr., Treadwell Gibbons, Shaki Darrell, and Clay Darrell, the Harris Bay boys remain well-equipped for the task of defending what took decades to acquire.
Saturday’s match starts at 10 am at Lord’s, St David’s.
