Pugilistic action abounded at Saturday’s Fight Night Champion at The Shed in Dockyard, with Bermuda’s Nikki Bascome triumphant in his highly anticipated rematch against Alvin Lagumbay of Philippines and Andre Lambe producing another knock-out performance.
After showing some early rust following a lengthy lay-off from action inside ther squared circle Bascome found his rhythm in recording a unanimous decsion against his welterweight rival, as the three judges returned scores of 80-72, 78-74 and 79-73, all in favour of the local fighter.
Bascome demonstrated solid infighting and ring generalship throughout much of the match, which raised his record to 12 wins versus a single defeat.
Meanwhile, Lambe, who was allowed to fight despite failing to match or be under the established welterweight limit of 147lb, appeared clearly the bigger man than his Filipino opponent, Ronniel Tabayag, who had come in at 145 lb, compared to the Bermudian at 153.
Lambe’s greater mass, combined with his superior power and skill, made for a short outing, as he sent his opponent to the canvas in the third round and watching as the Tabayag failed to get up before referee Anthony Mouchette had completed his count.\
The win was Lambe’s eighth, against zero defeats, with this one bittersweet, as he paid tribute to his recently departed friend Marco Warren, killed in an unresolved road ‘accident’, by displaying a PHC Zebras jersey at the end.
The amateur card saw Gabriel Curiel defeated Kaelin Cox by unanimous decision, while Noah Andrews defeated Sweden Bashir by technical knockout.
