Bartenders at Grotto Bay Beach Hotel Stage Sick-Out Over Overtime Pay Dispute

Grotto Bay Beach Resort Bermuda — TNN News has received word this morning that full-time bartenders and bar staff at the Grotto Bay Beach Resort Hotel have staged a coordinated protest action, calling in sick in what is being described as a “sick-out” in response to ongoing issues with unpaid overtime.

According to reliable sources, the bartenders—who have reportedly been working extended hours—have not received proper overtime compensation. Instead, they’ve been paid at their regular hourly rate, despite consistently exceeding the standard workweek threshold.

Frustration among the staff has been building for weeks. Workers have reportedly raised the issue with hotel management on several occasions, to no avail. Additionally, TNN understands that the relevant union was notified weeks ago, yet no significant action or resolution has taken place.

Facing continued inaction and mounting frustration, the bartenders decided to take matters into their own hands, launching today’s sick-out as a form of protest.

Guests and hotel operations were not impacted, with limited bar service available.

This developing situation raises broader concerns about labor rights and fair compensation within the hospitality sector.

Grotto Bay Hotel management responded to TNN queries.

In response to reports of a sick-out staged by bartenders at the Grotto Bay Beach Hotel Resort, night duty manager David Hillier told TNN that operations are continuing as normal.

“At this point, we are carrying on as per normal here,” Hillier stated. “We have our second bartenders in, so we don’t have anything else to comment on. The people that called in were reported sick, and that was the only information provided to us.”

When asked how many bartenders called in sick or how many bars are currently operational during the day, Hillier responded, “I’m the night manager on duty,” and declined to provide further details.
