In our fast-paced world, where distractions abound, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of focusing on the road while driving. Staying attentive behind the wheel can significantly prevent accidents, save lives, and ensure a safer tomorrow for all road users.
According to the Bermuda Police Service Road Traffic Collison Report for January – December 2023, there were a total of 1090 (numbers are subject to change) collisions recorded, which included:
- 13 fatalities
- 112 serious injuries
- 228 collisions caused by inattention
- 54 alcohol-related
With 228 collisions caused by inattention last year, BRSC is urging the motoring public to do their part. We must collectively commit to prioritizing road safety by focusing where it matters the most – on the road.
As we enter the month of February, let’s refocus and unite in our commitment to good driving behaviours and reducing distractions.
Distractions, such as texting, phone calls, adjusting the radio, or even daydreaming, divert our attention from the road and increase the risk of accidents. Every time we get behind the wheel, we hold not only our lives but also the lives of others in our hands.
Here are some key points to remember while driving:
- Stay Connected, Stay Safe:While it’s essential to stay connected, it’s equally crucial to know when to disconnect. Use hands-free devices for calls if necessary, but always avoid texting or engaging in activities that take your eyes off the road.
- Eliminate Distractions:Ensure that your full attention is on the road by eliminating distractions. Put your mobile phone on silent, or better yet, place it out of reach to resist the temptation of using it while driving. Adjust seat settings and music before starting your journey, so you can concentrate on the road without having to make adjustments while driving.
- Stay Mindful and Alert:Develop a habit of staying present and alert while driving. Be aware of your surroundings, including the movements of other vehicles, pedestrians, and potential hazards. Regularly check your mirrors to be informed about the traffic around you. Avoid daydreaming or getting lost in thought, as maintaining a focused mind set is crucial for quick decision-making on the road.
Remember don’t drink and drive, drive with care and caution, and slow down Bermuda. “
