Antoine Daniels, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) stated, “A number of these arrests were in accordance with section 315F of the Criminal Code Act 1907, which gives police officers the authority to stop and search people, as well as vehicles, for offensive weapons – particularly, in anticipation of violence. We acknowledge some in the community have ongoing concerns about this section of legislation. However its use, as stipulated, continues to assist the Bermuda Police Service in disrupting individuals who may have intended on causing harm to others, using weapons.
I wish to remind the public that going armed in public is not only an offence, but it greatly increases the chances of the person carrying knives and other similar items being seriously injured, or worse. We thank you for your continued support in providing us information on individuals seen carrying weapons, or acting in a suspicious manner. Your assistance is making a real difference. Again, thank you.”
