A 59-year-old American man has been formally charged in Bermuda in connection with a major drug seizure that authorities say could have caused a “significant tragedy” on the island.
Michael D. Jackson, of Detroit, Michigan, appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday to face multiple indictable drug-related charges. He is accused of conspiring with Tracy Ann Williams to import fentanyl, carfentanyl, cannabis and cannabis vape pens, and THC-infused gummies into Bermuda between a date unknown and July 18, 2025.
Due to the seriousness of the charges, Jackson was not required to enter a plea. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court at the next monthly arraignment session.
The case is linked to the July arrests of four individuals aboard a cruise ship bound for Bermuda. Acting Superintendent Derricka Burns of the Bermuda Police Service revealed that officers intercepted a large quantity of illicit drugs during the mid-July operation. Among the substances seized was carfentanyl, an extremely potent synthetic opioid approximately one hundred times stronger than fentanyl, originally developed for veterinary use to tranquilize large animals such as elephants.
Burns stressed the grave risk such drugs pose to public safety. “The quantity recovered was highly dangerous,” she said. “This seizure potentially prevented a tragedy from occurring in Bermuda.”
Authorities continue to investigate, and further updates are expected as the case progresses.
