BREAKING NEWS: A frightening close call unfolded on a busy runway at Miami International Airport when an American Airlines flight bound for Bermuda was forced to abort its takeoff after a business jet entered the same active runway, prompting a federal investigation.
According to ABC News, American Airlines Flight 308 had been cleared for takeoff and was accelerating down Runway 8 Right at approximately 60 miles per hour with 112 passengers and five crew members on board when the incident occurred.
Air traffic control recordings captured the tense moments as the American Airlines crew received takeoff clearance while a NetJets-operated business jet was instructed to cross the same runway. Flight tracking data shows the two aircraft came within approximately one-third of a mile of each other before the American Airlines pilots rejected the takeoff to avoid a potential collision.
During radio communications, an air traffic controller questioned the business jet crew after the runway crossing.
“You just crossed an active runway.”
The pilot responded:
“It told me to cross the runway, sir.”
American Airlines confirmed to ABC News that its flight crew discontinued the takeoff after spotting another aircraft on the runway. The aircraft later departed safely and landed in Bermuda without further incident.
The business jet operator, NetJets, declined to comment on the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation into the runway incursion to determine exactly how the two aircraft ended up on the same runway at the same time.
The incident is the latest in a series of high-profile runway safety concerns across the United States, raising renewed questions about air traffic control procedures and runway operations at some of the nation’s busiest airports.
