Alan Frith awarded Long Distance title as Smith is disqualified

Alan Frith was handed a belated victory in the Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Race after Friday’s protest hearing disqualified rival skippers Benn Smith and Maxwell Curtis.

Smith and Curtis were involved in a collision while exiting Town Cut moments after the start of Monday’s race, with the latter flying a protest flag against the former because he and his crew, Wesley Tucker, believed it was an infringement.

But the protest committee ruled that both skippers had crossed the line—figuratively and literally—handing the coveted first place to Frith. With his sister and crew Sarah Frith by his side, he had only just outpaced Curtis at the finish line off Watford Island.

The ruling dashed Smith’s hopes for a third consecutive jewel race win—and a fourth overall—while Curtis saw his podium dreams vanish in the protest room.

For Frith, it was sweet redemption, as he added a second Edward Cross Long Distance Race triumph to his trophy shelf.
