African Cultural Center Is Looking for a New Owner

This is a sad event for me. These are of authentic African items displayed at the Bermuda African Dance Company studio, at the old Berkeley building. The studio is about to close down. A huge part of Bermuda’s history and connection with Africa will shortly be gone.

These African artifacts, fabric, instruments and clothing are from Ghana, Guinea and the Gambia. They are hard to find even in the native countries. This is our African heritage in Bermuda.

The sale of these beautiful African artifacts mark the end of an era; the end of the Bermuda African Dance Company, mainly due to lack of support.

Our African heritage in Bermuda is being sold. I feel, as people of the African diaspora in Bermuda, we should not let this happen. We need to have a place to teach African studies and history, especially to the children and this space can serve that purpose.

The space could also be a Cultural Centre for theatre performances, drumming, dance music, writing. This will all be going without support from all of us.

How can you help keep this space open as an African Cultural Centre? We can start with a serious meeting of individuals of like minds.

TNN News is setting the record straight the owners of the studio are retiring and are looking for someone to buy the art affects and continue on the heritage of this African Cultural Centre.
