While many marked Good Friday with quiet reflection, the Warren Simmons Naval Field came alive with joy, laughter, and generosity as the Open Your Heart Foundation held its 14th annual Good Friday Giveaway Extravaganza. Organized by a close-knit team of ten volunteers, this beloved community event has grown into Bermudas most anticipated celebrations.
Fourteen years—we’ve been doing this for 14 years—and every year, it just gets better.”
This year, despite multiple competing events across the island, the field was filled with families, children, seniors, and everyone in between. “When I came up the hill and looked out into the crowd, I just thought—this is amazing. We did this. And we should be proud.”
The extravaganza truly lived up to its name—everything was free. From food to gifts, entertainment to groceries, no one left empty-handed. Special attention was given to seniors, thanks to Galvette Waldron, who organized transportation, seating, and even centerpieces for their dedicated space. And for preteens and teens, new extreme sports activities were added to keep the whole family engaged.
Though the Foundation has garnered support from larger companies like BGA and Barritt’s and other corporate sponsors we can’t do it without you, we also would like to thank the small mom-and-pop businesses that remain loyal to the organization. “They show up every year without question.” “They believe in what we do.”
From humble beginnings—a group of friends simply looking to support their children and neighbors—the Open Your Heart Foundation has become a beacon of hope and unity. “No real direction, no formal structure, but somehow, someway, 14 years later, here we are,” reflecting on their journey.
As the music played, kids danced (one even earned a scholarship on the spot), and volunteers smiled through the bustle. “This year I positioned myself so I could enjoy it. And it’s amazing. I love what we do. Everything is free. Everything is love.”
