A Call for Calm, Clarity and Collaboration says Arianna Hodgson

The recent headlines describing the U.S. Trade Representative’s proposed port fees as an “existential threat” to Bermuda have understandably raised concern across our community.

While the potential impact is serious, we must respond with calm, clarity, and strategy—not fear. At the heart of this issue is the wellbeing of our families. Any disruption to the flow of imported goods—food, medicine, fuel, and household essentials—will be felt most directly at kitchen tables and in the lives of everyday Bermudians already grappling with high costs and economic uncertainty. This is not just a shipping or trade issue. It’s a family, community and national issue.

Now is the time for collaboration across all spheres—government, opposition, business, and civil society. We are strongest when we work together, especially when the stakes are this high.

The Government, in partnership with industry and the Opposition, must first seek a clear understanding of the proposed policy—specifically how it may affect Bermuda’s critical supply chain from the United States. From there, we must evaluate viable alternatives to mitigate risk.

These may include using vessels not built in China, exploring alternative shipping routes through Canada or the Caribbean, and seeking support through the United Kingdom, given our constitutional relationship.

This challenge also calls us to think regionally. Greater engagement with CARICOM could offer shared strategies and logistical support to address vulnerabilities in our supply chain.

More than anything, Bermudians deserve clear and united leadership. A joint statement from the Government and the Opposition would send a strong message of reassurance and stability—especially at a time when mental health pressures are rising and people are looking to their leaders for guidance.

Let’s not sound alarm bells. Let’s lead—with bold, coordinated action rooted in facts and compassion. Together, we can navigate this challenge and reinforce the resilience Bermuda is known for.
