Reports of possible industrial action at the Department of Public Transportation (DPT) in the wake of an alleged physical altercation involving a manager and an employee. The incident is said to have occurred in November of last year on the DPT compound on Palmetto Road in Devonshire.
It is understood the victim of the purported assault has since been suspended, while the manager remains on the job.
Workers telling TNN there is concern over what has been described as the mishandling of the incident and claims of a now hostile working environment, unfairness and a lack of accountability on the part of management.
Staff are now said to be demanding stronger measures to address their concerns which they say they have made known to the Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport as well as DPT Director Jonelle Christopher and Head of the Civil Service, Cherie Whitter.
TNN understands the matter has also been raised with the Bermuda Industrial Union which represents non managerial staff at the DPT.
The workers contend failure to reach a satisfactory resolution of this situation could result in industrial action.
We have reached out to the parties mentioned for comment on the workers claims and here is the response.
“A Ministry of Transport spokesperson said, “The media is advised that the facts surrounding this matter as outlined below are inaccurate. That said, the Ministry does acknowledge an incident occurred and an internal investigation in progress.”
”Also it is not customary for the Ministry to speak publicly on staffing matters. Lastly the Ministry has not received any notice of industrial action.”
