OBA Leader Announcing Replacement Senator For Marcus Jones

As you will recall, with the recent retirement of former Senator Marcus Jones last week, the OBA had a vacancy to fill.  Today it gives me great pleasure to appoint a dedicated young Bermudian, Mr Douglas DeCouto.  ‘Doug’, as he prefers to be called, is eager and prepared to hit the ground running.

He is the EVP Group Head of Exposure Management at Aspen Re/Aspen Insurance Holdings and holds a PhD in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, including teaching.  He has a Masters’s degree in Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from MIT, with a grade point average of 5.0! and a Certificate in Financial Engineering from MIT’s Sloan School of Business.  Doug is married and the father of one daughter and two sons.

His interests include the National Museum of Bermuda Board of Trustees, where he is the Chairman of the Board. He is especially proud of the Museum’s work over the past few years, specifically in transforming the National Museum of Bermuda and taking over the Casemates facility.  Doug has a keen interest in Bermuda history, which he has explored by researching key historical documents and data (reports, maps, numerical data), and making them available in digital formats via his website. These resources have been used by several researchers and academics to explore our history.

He is a member of the Board of the Bermuda Red Cross.  He was Corporal/Acting Sergeant for the Bermuda Regiment from 2005 to 2010. He also participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs and was part of the Campus Committee on Race Relations.

In his leisure time, he enjoys boating and watersports, competitive sailing, including Bermuda Fitted Dinghy and Newport-Bermuda.

As a fresh new face to the Parliamentary team, the One Bermuda Alliance warmly welcomes Doug to the Party. He is well qualified, and we look forward to working with him and to his contributions in the Upper House as our newest Senator.   We have every confidence in his capabilities.
